Hvar, the island of sunshine, lavender and wine, is situated in the central Dalmatian archipelago, part of Split - Dalmatia County. Hvar has always been known for its important geographical position, a multitude of cultur - historical monuments and rich history. With over 2700 sunny hours per year, Hvar is the sunniest island in the Adriatic, and thanks to beautiful and diverse nature and rich tourist offer considered as one of ten most beautiful islands in the world.

The island Hvar is inhabited since ancient times, nearly 6,000 years ago, as evidenced by the number of founded material remains from that period. Name of the island is of Greek origin and comes from the word Pharos – lighthouse, later Romans derived island name to Pharia and medieval Croats changed its name to Hvar.

The island of Hvar is administratively subdivided into two cities and two municipalities: these are the towns of Hvar and Stari Grad, and municipalities Jelsa and Sućuraj. The town of Hvar is situated on the southwestern part of the island and is the largest settlement on the island Hvar. The town of Hvar is characterized by a multitude of culturally - historical monuments, excellent cuisine and a rich nightlife. While visiting Hvar's sights, we suggest you to visit beautiful Hvar cathedral, Hvar theater from 17th century (the first public theater in Europe), a Franciscan monastery and Hvar Heritage Museum. The wealth of tourist offer of Hvar is completed by many hotels, restaurants, cafes and shops in the town center. From the town Hvar are organized daily boat trips to the beautiful Paklinski Islands. The town of Hvar is rich with many attractive bays and beaches.

Town Stari Grad is situated about 20 km north of the town of Hvar, in the beautiful Starigrad bay. The rich history of the Old Town dates back to the year 384 when it was inhabited by ancient Greeks who established the city and named it Pharos. Stari Grad has a multitude of religious monuments and architectural sites, from which is most important the Stari Grad Plain, which is under the protection of UNESCO. Today, town Stari Grad is an attractive tourist destination, not only on island Hvar but also in whole Dalmatia. Starigrad bay has many attractive beaches and bays of which are the most famous Banj and Lanterna beaches.

In the center of the island there's a place Jelsa. Picturesque streets and squares, dense pine forests, beautiful beaches and a multitude of activities makes Jelsa as ideal family destination. On the far east of the island of Hvar is Sućuraj. Although it is relatively small place, Sućuraj is rich in tourist attractions. Around Sućuraj are many beautiful beaches and bays such as Perna and Mlaska.

Although the main activity of the island of Hvar tourism, the island's economy is also based on fishing, olive growing, viticulture, and the cultivation and processing of lavender and rosemary. Particularly noteworthy is the viticulture and wine production under the southern slopes of the island's highest peak Sv. Nikola. Settlements Sveta Nedjelja and Ivan Dolac are home of the most famous Croatian autochthonous grape variety, Plavac Mali. In the middle of the island, spreads heavenly lavender fields which villagers processed into therapeutic essential oils.

The island of Hvar has excellent transport connections with mainland. From the Split daily operates ferry line to Stari Grad, and catamarans for Jelsa and Hvar, and from Drvenik daily drives a ferry to Sućuraj. During the season operates international lines from Ancona and Pescara to island Hvar. The island Hvar is recognized as a very attractive nautical destination visited by many sailors with their sailboats, catamarans and yachts.

The ideal Mediterranean climate, rich cultural heritage, superb gastronomy, heavenly beaches and bays and untouched nature are the reasons why an increasing number of tourists visit island of Hvar every year.
