Along the southern coast of the island of Hvar is located the island of Šćedro, one of the pearls of the Adriatic Sea. Because of its untouched nature, this picturesque wooded island is protected as a nature park. The clean sea, hidden bays and scents of pine trees and aromatic herbs are the perfect recipe for relaxation and escape from the hectic city life. In the waters of Šćedro were fought famous battles from Roman times, such as those between Pompey and Caesar from 49 BC.
The bays of Šćedro are known as anchorages and safe harbors from old times. The most famous bays are Veli Porat and Mostir on the north side of the island. Bay Veli porat forks into several beautiful backwaters in which you can find several restaurants with delicious seafood specialties. Bay Mostir is a paradise for enjoyment and relaxation. In the restaurant of Kordić family you can taste traditional Dalmatian dishes. In the bay Mostir there are remains of the Dominican monastery from the 15th century, where every first Wednesday in a July is held a Holy Mass in honor of Our Lady of Mercy, known as the event ‘’Fiesta on Šćedro’’.
On the island, during the summer, lived about 30 people, while in winter around 15. The only village on the island Nastane in the inland with only two maintained home and the rest are the ruins. The island does not have electricity or water so people use ‘’gusterne’’ which water quality is regularly monitored, and for electricity are used generators and solar energy.
During the summer season to Šćedro daily rides boat from the place Zavala on the island of Hvar. For many boaters and tourists, Šćedro is an inevitable destination on sailing along the Dalmatian islands who find safe anchorage for their sailboats, catamarans and yachts in Šćedro bays.
