Stari Grad is one of the oldest Croatian cities. It is located on west side of the island Hvar, at the bottom Starogrojska bay. The rich history of Stari Grad dates back to ancient times. In 384 it was inhabited by ancient Greeks from the island of Paros who established the city and named it Pharos.

Stari Grad is one of the oldest Croatian cities. It is located on west side of the island of Hvar, at the bottom Starogrojska bay. The rich history of Stari Grad dates back to ancient times. In 384 it was inhabited by ancient Greeks from the island of Paros who established the city and named it Pharos. Due to its excellent location on the island, for centuries Stari Grad was a sanctuary for seafarers. Today, Stari Grad is one of the most famous and most visited Dalmatian cities.

Stari Grad consists of five villages: Dol, Rudina, Selca, Stari Grad and Vrbanj. Old part of Stari Grad is adorned by traditional stone houses, and the town is rich with numerous religious monuments and architectural sites from which is most important the Stari Grad Plain, which is under the protection of UNESCO. From the churches of Stari Grad should be mentioned the parish church of St. John, a Renaissance church of St. Rocco and the church of St. Peter with the Dominican Monastery. On the eastern part of the Stari Grad is placed a picturesque baroque square, Škor, named after the old shipyard that used to be situated on that area. One of the most famous monuments of the Stari Grad is certainly the Tvrdalj, castle of the poet Petar Hektorović.

Stari Grad bay has more than 40 attractive sandy, gravel and rocky beaches of which the most famous are city beaches Banje and Lanterna. Banje is pebble beach on the north side of Stari Grad bay. Due to shallow waters and sandy seabed is suitable for small children and is accessible persons with disabilities. On the beach Banje there are several catering facilities. Lanterna beach is located on the south side of the bay, and consists of sandy bay and concrete slabs. Lanterna beach has also several catering facilities. Near the port of Stari Grad there is a beautiful sandy bay Maslinica.

You can go discover Stari Grad and surrounding area by cycling and learn more about history and culture of the Stari Grad. Stari Grad has many restaurants and taverns where you can taste traditional island dishes and enjoy fine Hvar wines such as famous Plavac mali.

Stari Grad is the largest port on inland of Hvar and is daily connected with the mainland by several catamaran and ferry lines from Split, Drvenik and Dubrovnik. Sail into five nautical miles deep Stari Grad bay and find a safe berth for your sailboat, catamaran or motor boat. Port of Stari grad has 70 berths equipped with buoys and connections for water and electricity.
