Žirje is the farthest permanently inhabitant island of the Šibenik archipelago, and also the biggest. It's located about 20 kilometers southwestern from Šibenik, near the Kornati national park. Žirje was once covered with oak tree forest, so the island is named by the fruit of the tree, acorn. Today is known as a rich fishing area, with cultivation of figs, olives and grapes.
Island Žirje has very indented coastline with numerous bays, surrounded by lots of rocks, reefs and islets. Major settlement on the island is Žirje, which like every Dalmatian place has his own festivals and events that attract visitors. If you want to visit this picturesque island, rent a beautiful catamaran or sailboat in one of the nearby marinas: marina Hramina – Murter, marina Betina – Murter, Pirovac city port, ACI marina Jezera, marina Tribunj, ACI marina Vodice, marina Mandolina Šibenik, marina Kremik – Primošten, marina Frapa- Rogoznica.
Žirje is ideal place for those who want to spend peaceful vacation and enjoy the summer. Clean sea, beautiful beaches and lovely bays, like Velika i Mala, attracts many sailors who spend their holidays sailing around Šibenik islands.
