The easternmost island of the Cyclades archipelago is Amorgos, located about 30 km southeast of Naxos. Amorgos is elongated in the direction east - west and is mostly hilly and rocky. It has been inhabited since prehistoric times, as evidenced by the numerous sites of the Cycladic culture. In recent years, the island of Amorgos has grown into a very popular tourist destination and experienced an economic boom thanks to the film directed by Luc Besson, '' The Big Blue '', whose scenes were filmed in its aquatorium.
On the Amorgos live about 1,900 permanent residents. The largest settlement on the island is Amorgos (Chora), and of other small settlements should mention Aigiali, Arkesini, Katapola etc. Town is adorned by traditional white stone houses with blue doors and windows and many narrow streets full of small restaurants and souvenir shops. Northeast of Chora is situated picturesque Byzantine monastery Panagia Kozoviotis from the 11th century, situated on a high cliff. The main port of the island is the village of Katapola, 6 km west of Chora.
Like the rest of the Cycladic islands, Amorgos is proud of its beautiful and attractive beaches. The most popular beaches are Aegiali, Katapola, Agios Pavlos, Agios Panteleimonas and Kalotaritissa. Even though isn’t popular as neighboring island of Santorini and Naxos, Amorgos is equally idyllic and interesting.
