Patmos

Patmos is the northernmost island of the Dodecanese archipelago. This small hilly and rocky island is characterized by very rugged coastline with many bays and caves. Patmos is one of the most sacred places in Greece and a very popular pilgrimage site, which bears the name 'Jerusalem of the Aegean'. The reason for this is the Monastery of St. John the Theologian and the Cave of the Apocalypse in which according to legend St. John wrote the Gospel of John and the Book of Apocalypse. The monastery and the cave together with the old town Chora are included on the World Heritage List of UNESCO.

The island has about 3,000 residents who are mainly engaged in tourism and agriculture. The main place on the island is a town Patmos or Chora, while the largest island port and place is town Skala. Besides the already mentioned historical sites, Patmos is adorned by traditional Aegean architecture with white houses. Skala port is seasonally crowded with boats and yachts, so if you don’t find a free space in port anchor in one of the numerous island bays. In Skala you will find many restaurants, cafes, night clubs and shops.

The most beautiful beaches of the island of Patmos are located in peaceful and picturesque bays. Some of the most attractive beaches are Diakofti, Grikos, Kampos, Merikas and Vagis. This idyllic island provides a peaceful and relaxing holiday and its coastal architecture and valuable cultural heritage leave no one indifferent.
