Genoa is the capital of the Italian region of Liguria. It’s the sixth largest Italian city and the second largest port on the Mediterranean after Marseille. Genoa has a rich and interesting history which dates back to ancient times. From the 11th to the 18th century Genoa was one of the four most important Italian Republics. Because of its glorious past and great power, Genoa was known as '' La Superba (magnificent).
Together with Milan and Turin, Genoa forms northwest industrial triangle, one of the most developed economic areas of Italy. Genoa is full of sights, sculptures and historical monuments, and the old medieval part of the city is on the UNESCO list of world heritage. The main attraction of Genoa is a large marine aquarium, the second largest in Europe. Genoa has many traditional Italian restaurants and taverns, cafes, shops, souvenir shops, markets, etc. Genoa has spawned many famous people and best known is certainly Christopher Columbus.
Genoa has six quality marinas for berthing and boat rental, making it the main nautical center of the northwestern Italy. Near the Genoa there are several beautiful and attractive beaches and most beautiful are in surrounding villages of Portofino, Arenzano and Sestri Levante.
