Palermo is the capital of Sicily, administrative, economic and cultural center of the island. It is located on the extreme northwest of the island, on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea, surrounded by high mountain ranges. Palermo is a city of long and significant history. The area of today Palermo has been inhabited since the Mesolithic and the city was founded by the Phoenicians in 734 BC. Today, the Palermo is one of the most famous Italian cities annually visited by millions of tourists from around the world.
Palermo has about 670,000 residents, but with surrounding area has over one million inhabitants. Although at first acts as overcrowded and chaotic city, on the other hand is very nice and charming. On every step are visible magnificent palaces and buildings of Oriental and Southern style. The old town center from the Norman time has been listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, together with the cathedrals in Cefalu and Monreale. Palermo is full of restaurants, bars and small shops with traditional handicrafts. Palermo has several marinas and charter bases where you can rent a boat with or without skipper and sail along the fascinating Sicilian coast.
The beaches of Palermo are known all over the Mediterranean. One of the most attractive beaches is Mondello, a magnificent beach with golden sand surrounded by luxury mansions and villas. West of Palermo lays beautiful sandy beach of San Vito Lo Capo. 35 km west of Palermo is an international airport which connects the city with all major European destinations.
