Trapani is a city and municipality on the northwest of Sicily, about 30 km north of Marsala. Trapani was founded by the ancient Elymians. During the first Punic War, the city was conquered by the Carthaginians until the end of the war when it came under the rule of the Romans. Today, Trapani is an important seaport and the main starting point for sailing towards the beautiful Egadi Islands.
Trapani has about 70 000 inhabitants, and the main economic activities of Trapani are fishing, salt production, viticulture and tourism. Most sights and buildings of the old town were built in Baroque style, and some of the most important are the church of St. Augustine from the 14th century, the Trapani Cathedral, Triton's Fountain and others. Trapani has plenty of lovely restaurants, shops, supermarkets, cafes and bars. There are several marinas and charter agency in Trapani where you can rent a boat and sail off to the Egadi Islands or sail along the Sicilian coast.
