Tropea is an idyllic tourist town on the south of Italy, in the Calabria region, on the shore of Tyrrhenian Sea. Tropea is located on a high cliff above the sea, and thanks to the fascinating landscape, beautiful beach, clear blue sea and pleasant climate is one of the most popular tourist destinations in this part of Italy.
The history of Tropea dates back to ancient times. Tropea has about 6400 inhabitants who are mostly engaged in tourism and hospitality, and in surrounding villages is cultivated special sort of onion (cipolla di Tropea) of which are preparing various specialties and even ice cream. Although not a big city, it is extremely charming and always full of tourists. The center of the town is on a small hill and is adorned by multitude of squares and narrow streets. From city landmarks stand out Norman cathedral from 12th century and monastery of Santa Maria dell'Isola located on a high cliff, formerly island, opposite the town.
Tropea has lots of restaurants and taverns with a rich offer of traditional specialties and delicious wines, and several gelaterias with a wide variety of ice cream flavors. Sandy beach, located at the foot of the town, is one of the most beautiful in this part of Italy, with fine white sand, turquoise blue sea and neat environment. Tropea has a modern marina with over 600 berths making it a very popular nautical destination.
