The high mountain region of Montenegro

The last two of the many listed Montenegrin natural wonders can be found in the mountainous northern area of Montenegro and those are Durmitor National Park and the oldest national park in Montenegro - Biogradska Gora. This karst region is also the highest region in Montenegro, as well as an integral part of the Dinaric Alps, famous for its unspoiled wilderness.

National Park of Durmitor

Character of the northern, mountainous region of Montenegro is best illustrated by the largest national park in Montenegro, the Durmitor National Park. Here you can find the deepest European canyon, canyon Tara, which was created by the effect of the Tara River through thousands of years. Tara River is the treasure of Montenegro and they often call it the "A tear of Europe" because of its extremely clear water - it had shaped its way through soft limestone rock, and the result is one of the deepest canyons in the world - in some parts deep up to 1300 m. The most interesting part of the Tara river canyon is teeming with rapids, waterfalls, dense forests rich with various trees and breath is taken to those whose needs are most difficult to satisfy. Canyon Tara was included on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. In addition to having one of the deepest canyons, Durmitor National Park has the highest mountain peak in Montenegro, Bobotov kuk (2582 m). The average height of Durmitor is 1,400 meters, including 48 mountains that are over 2,000 meters.
In the summer mountain Durmitor is an excellent place for all kinds of active forms of recreation, but in winter this is the best place in Montenegro, with ski location and resort Žabljak (1465 m above sea level), which is also the highest city at the Balkan area.

Montenegro's oldest national park Biogradska Gora

The 5,400 ha national park Biogradska Gora is an isolated area in Montenegro. 80% exists out of primeval forest. Already in 1878 this park was declared as Montenegro's first national park, one 6 years of the declaration of world's first national park Yellowstone. The park is not only well-known for its 60 meter ancient trees, but also for the five glacial lakes known as “mountain eyes”.
