Lanzarote is the easternmost of the Canary Island, the fourth largest and third most populated island. Lanzarote is mostly mountainous island of volcanic origin. The entire island is protected by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve. The dramatic landscape and spectacular nature annually attract over 2.5 million tourists on Lanzarote. The main natural attraction is Jameos del Agua, an underground cave formed by lava, is part of the massive volcanic cave system on the north of Lanzarote. At the center of the island is situated wine growing region of La Geria which is said to be the cradle of Malvasia; in recessed holes of black volcanic sand surrounded by stone walls are grown bunches of Malvasia, unique in the world.
Lanzarote has around 142 000 inhabitants and almost half of them live in the largest city of Arrecife, located in the center of the island on the east coast. Arrecife is a small cosmopolitan city with lots of parks, promenades, squares and narrow streets full of boutiques, shops, restaurants and bars. Arrecife is duty-free shopping area with a lot of designer shops and specialized stores. In Arrecifeu is located large newly opened Lanzarote marina with 400 berths and charter base for boat rental.
Some of the most attractive beaches of the Canaries are situated right on the island of Lanzarote. Papagayo is one of the most idyllic beaches on the island, the magical beach of golden sand located on the north of the island. Also one of the most popular beaches is Famara, ideal for water sports and wind surfing. 5 km southwest of the city of Arrecife, in the village of San Bartolomé, is located international insular airport.
