Croatia is a Central Mediterranean country. It stretches from the eastern edges of the Alps on the northwest to the Pannonian Basin and banks of the Danube on the east, over the mountain range of Dinara in the middle and southern part which ends at the coast of Adriatic Sea. The country is thoughtfully surrounded by Hungary to the north, Slovenia to the northwest, Serbia to the east, Bosnia and Herzegovina to the southeast and Montenegro on the south. The largest island is Krk (near Rijeka) which has a land area of 407 square km, while the other well known Croatian islands are Hvar, Brač, Korčula, Pag, Vis and Cres.
The climate is Mediterranean along the Adriatic coast, meaning warm dry summers and mild winters, with 2,600 hours of sunlight on average yearly - it is one of the sunniest coastlines in Europe! In the interior of the country, the climate is continental with hot summers and cold, snowy winters.
