Overview

Croatia is a Central Mediterranean country. It stretches from the eastern edges of the Alps on the northwest to the Pannonian Basin and banks of the Danube on the east, over the mountain range of Dinara in the middle and southern part which ends at the coast of Adriatic Sea. The country is thoughtfully surrounded by Hungary to the north, Slovenia to the northwest, Serbia to the east, Bosnia and Herzegovina to the southeast and Montenegro on the south. Croatia has about 4.2 million inhabitants and the capital and largest Croatian city is Zagreb. Republic of Croatia folding 56,538 km of land and 33,200 km of internal and territorial waters.

Croatia has an amazing 5,835km of coastline, 4,057km of which belongs to islands, cliffs and reefs. There are 1,185 islands in the Adriatic, but only about 50 are inhabited. The largest island is Krk (near Rijeka) which has a land area of 407 square km, while the other well known Croatian islands are Hvar, Brač, Korčula, Pag, Vis and Cres.

The climate is Mediterranean along the Adriatic coast, meaning warm dry summers and mild winters, with 2,600 hours of sunlight on average yearly - it is one of the sunniest coastlines in Europe! In the interior of the country, the climate is continental with hot summers and cold, snowy winters.
